Josh Rager reflects on the influence of the Canadian landscape in art in general, and the unconscious way in which it colours creative expression in Canada.

Josh Rager Quintet featuring Alex Sipiagin

Live at Upstairs Jazz Bar & Grill, Montreal (February 25th, 2017)

Josh Rager (piano), Alex Sipiagin (trumpet), Kelly Jefferson (sax),  Fraser Hollins (bass), Rich Irwin (drums).

Josh Rager discusses the elusive, initial passion that lead him down a path to be a professional Jazz musician.

The compositions of trumpeter Woody Shaw can be seen to exist as part of a continuum which includes composers such as Miles Davies, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, and Herbie Hancock. Shaw's own particular sound as a composer is a result of the way in which he extrapolated from and expanded upon contemporary compositional techniques prevalent in both jazz and classical music.
